KAB MAKES HEADLINES IN TIME MAGAZINE, CEMENTING ITS ROLE IN MALAYSIA'S ENERGY REVOLUTION

· Kinergy Advancement Berhad (KAB): Energising the Present, Transforming the Future.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 23 (Bernama) -- APAC 2024 Top Energy Sustainability Solutions Provider Kinergy Advancement Berhad (“KAB” or “Group”, “敬业”, Bloomberg: KASB MK), Kinergy Advancement Berhad (KAB), Malaysia’s leading Sustainable Energy Solutions Specialist, has garnered international recognition with a feature in the renowned TIME magazine. This milestone highlights KAB’s increasing role in shaping Malaysia’s sustainable energy sector and its contribution to international sustainability efforts.

TIME magazine’s article highlights KAB’s bold journey, tracing its evolution from an electrical engineering company founded in 1997 to a trailblazer in sustainable energy solutions. In the feature titled “We Invest in Our Present, Tomorrow, and Future: Energizing Tomorrow’s Sustainable Energy Solutions Today,” KAB’s transformation into a sustainable energy leader takes centre stage, offering insights into its innovative solutions and strategic growth.

KAB’s foray into sustainability began in 2018, long before it became a global priority. Initially specialising in the electrical construction of shopping malls, office buildings, and factories, the company identified a gap in post-construction energy management. This insight led to the establishment of its Sustainable Energy Solutions (SES) division in 2023, a move that also prompted a rebranding to reflect its ambitious vision.

The article highlights KAB’s focus on efficiency, renewable energy, and clean energy technologies, including co-generation, waste heat recovery, solar PV systems, and biogas projects. Notably, KAB is Malaysia’s pioneer in introducing ORC-type waste heat recovery systems, converting industrial heat waste into usable energy without additional feedstock.

KAB’s business model flexibility is a key driver of its success. The company offers three engagement models: traditional project commissioning, a ‘zero capex’ model where KAB builds and owns power plants while selling energy to clients, and joint-venture arrangements. These models allow clients to access energy solutions tailored to their needs.

Additionally, KAB’s strategic partnership with PETRONAS as its only local technical partner reflects its capability in clean energy transition projects. Its innovative district cooling system, designed for Malaysia’s growing network of data centres, also highlights KAB’s foresight in addressing the energy-intensive demands of the digital age.

As TIME underscores, KAB is central to Malaysia’s push toward carbon neutrality by 2050. The company’s solutions prioritise reducing energy consumption for large commercial and industrial complexes, leveraging smart technologies for real-time efficiency monitoring. With strategic acquisitions and a rapidly diversifying portfolio, KAB is poised to meet the nation’s growing energy demands while leading the charge toward a greener future.

KAB's inclusion in TIME magazine showcases its innovative approach and strong commitment to sustainability. By featuring its achievements on such a prestigious platform, KAB enhances its reputation as a key player in the energy sector and reinforces Malaysia's leadership in the global clean energy movement.

MAYBANK'S VALUES-DRIVEN FINANCIAL SERVICES TO EMPOWER A PEOPLE CENTRIC ASEAN; AN OPPORTUNE TIME FOR ASEAN TO SHINE IN MALAYSIA'S CHAIRMANSHIP YEAR

Dato' Khairussaleh Ramli

Commentary by Dato’ Khairussaleh Ramli, President & Group CEO of Maybank

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 20 (Bernama) -- The continuous strengthening of the ASEAN economy in the last decade showcased the true resilience of the region, coupled with promising economic prospects owing to its strategic location, diverse economies, and commitment to regional integration. With the ASEAN-6 GDP growth strengthening to +4.8% in 2024 from +4% in 2023, and to remain stable at +4.7% in 2025, the region is in a strong position for accelerated growth and at the same time cushioning the risks from geopolitical uncertainties.

Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship comes at an opportune time. It underpins the theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, signalling the need for cohesive socio-economic development and planetary wellness. With Maybank already well aligned to the theme, our joint aspiration is to empower a people centric ASEAN, not just for 2025, but going beyond it.

This is our differentiating factor, centred on our purpose, which is to be a values-driven platform powered by a bionic workforce that humanises financial services.

To deliver on this aspiration, we bring our strengths together via four main pillars, namely, Values-Based Finance, Inclusive Economy for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), Sustainability and Social Impact. Maybank’s involvement will be centred on supporting regional financial stability and facilitating cross-border trade and investment within the ASEAN Economic Community as well as accelerating community empowerment initiatives across the region.

We have the opportunity to strengthen our commitment to a diverse set of beneficiary segments including Students, Youth, Women, Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), Marginalised Communities via our Beyond Banking initiatives and Corporates, SMEs and mSMEs and Individuals via our Banking Initiatives.

Our commitment will include supporting key ASEAN Chairmanship initiatives, including organising thought leadership forums surrounding ASEAN-led meetings and events, partnerships with Ministries and ASEAN, and introducing new products and solutions that will further accommodate the operating environment.

Via our deep understanding of the region, holistic approach, and smart multi-level collaborations, we remain optimistic of the prospects. The time is now, to create meaningful outcomes for all our stakeholders, and we have already made several headways.

In connecting ASEAN to the world, we have ramped up expansion of our Values-Based Finance offerings and will continue to drive innovative sustainable solutions across key markets. This will be underlined by the purpose of being a values based platform, incorporating the features of sustainability and ethical principles into our solutions and offerings to customers via myimpact. We have introduced multiple solutions under myimpact, and the recent launch of HERpower aims to increase our SME portfolio led by women entrepreneurs from 20% to 25% by 2026. This initiative will support over 43 million women-led SMEs in the region namely in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and Cambodia.

We also remain steadfast in strengthening our global Islamic banking position. This is prominent through our efforts to attain Islamic Wealth Management leadership position in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia with our Asset Under Management (AUM) growing by 35% Y-o-Y to RM85.3 billion. This and among other factors have culminated in maintaining our top 5 global leadership position. Additionally, the introduction of Salaam Market as a one-stop digital platform that allows SMEs to source halal-certified products at competitive prices will further boost businesses’ competitiveness in the Halal economy.

To further spur sustainable regional growth, we are committed to drive an Inclusive Economy, especially by empowering MSMEs. With this segment being the backbone of the economy for many countries in ASEAN, Maybank will continue to support MSMEs by scaling up our offering across key markets by providing expanded funding access and integrating solutions for ease of operations. Recently, Maybank announced a strategic investment in Funding Societies | Modalku, the largest unified digital finance platform for MSMEs in Southeast Asia, in efforts to promote inclusivity and bridge funding gaps within the communities we serve.

On the digital front, we continue to build on our regional digital banking ecosystem which would truly create a borderless environment for businesses and individuals transacting. Continued leadership in this segment saw strong growth in digital payments with more than 9.9 million active digital customers in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and Cambodia.

In supporting ASEAN’s role in managing key regional affairs, particularly in sub-regions like the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), Maybank is committed to be the preferred bank for Malaysia-Singapore transactions as we actively engage and connect businesses and governments for mutual benefit of both nations. Our support includes joint efforts to attract investments from Singapore but also as a gateway to expand in ASEAN. This will also include enabling key industries to thrive such as data centres, semiconductors, wealth management, logistics and manufacturing.

Through our global banking segment, we have placed an added focus to drive cross border trade and investment by enhancing regional cash management services for our customers via seamless digital onboarding. We also remain committed to serve the region by facilitating a stimulus investment environment as we continue to top the league tables by ranking #1 in ASEAN equity capital market and defended leadership across products in Malaysia.

With our strong footprint across the region, we are capable to further connect and broaden our clients’ access to the global economy. In supporting this agenda, our Invest ASEAN series will take centre stage with the objective of bringing together the region’s major investors, high net worth individuals, family offices and corporates in one centralised platform for engaging and revealing conversations.

As we strive to strengthen ASEAN as an attractive economic destination, we are cognisant for the need to drive positive Social Impact across the region. Through Maybank’s social impact arm, Maybank Foundation, which is the only financial institution in the region to have an ASEAN accreditation, and our extended business sectors, we remain steadfast to uplifting the communities we serve via our Beyond Banking and Banking initiatives.

The ASEAN Chairmanship by Malaysia will strengthen the region’s position as a competitive economic block, further connecting itself to the global economies. Maybank will play its own role to support this Chairmanship, leveraging new economy opportunities favourable to the countries in Southeast Asia while solidifying the region’s overall socio-economic growth prospects.

This upgrade highlights UEM Edgenta’s strong financial position, consistent business growth, and exceptional operational capabilities across its core segments, including Healthcare Support Services, Property and Facility Management, Infrastructure Services and Asset Consultancy.

In its announcement, MARC Ratings highlighted UEM Edgenta’s sustained ability to generate consistent cash flows, underpinned by its diversified revenue base and long-term contracts. This includes RM900 million worth of contracts for Healthcare Support Services in Singapore, spanning a period of five (5) years.

In infrastructure services, carried out by wholly-owned subsidiary Edgenta PROPEL Berhad, the group benefits from a long-term master maintenance services contract with Projek Lebuhraya Usahasama Berhad (PLUS) for highway maintenance. This contract ensures a stable income stream through 2038. Additionally, the group’s acquisition of a 60% equity stake in United Arab Emirates–based Kaizen Group, a property management company, for RM74.9 million in February 2024, further expands its property and facility solutions portfolio.

MARC Ratings highlighted the Company’s improved credit metrics and effective cost management initiatives, which have contributed to its enhanced risk profile and financial resilience. The rating agency also acknowledged prudent financial management, which has bolstered UEM Edgenta’s liquidity position and debt servicing capacity. For 9M2024, revenue increased by 7.6% y-o-y to RM2.2 billion and pre-tax profit rose by 5.1% to RM65.6 million. Huangmaohai Link Begins Trial Operation, Enhancing Connectivity in The Greater Bay Area

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 (Bernama) -- The Huangmaohai Link, a new major cross-sea passage project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), commenced trial operation on Dec 11.

This six-lane, two-way expressway stretches about 31 kilometres from Pingsha Town in the city of Zhuhai to Doushan Town in Taishan, part of Jiangmen, reducing travel time between the two cities from over an hour to around 30 minutes, according to a statement.

As the western extension of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the passage began construction in June 2020 and passed its acceptance inspection in November 2024. It encompasses two main bridges, namely the Gaolan Port Bridge and the Huangmaohai Bridge, the latter being world's longest three-tower cable-stayed highway design bridge.

The passage, which connects Hong Kong and Macao via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, offers stunning views of slender-waisted towers over the sea and flocks of egrets while also leading to attractions like Jiangmen’s historic watchtowers and the eco-friendly Birds’ Paradise wetland park.

Managed by the Guangdong Provincial Communication Group and involving 31 organisations and nearly 10,000 workers, the project faced formidable challenges, including frequent super typhoons, but was completed in just six years, demonstrating what officials call the “Huangmaohai speed”.

Beyond its functionality, the passage incorporates architectural beauty with five cable-stayed towers, combining aesthetics with innovation, such as advanced aerodynamic controls and environmentally sustainable design that bypasses protected reserves.

For residents of Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, and overseas Chinese, the Huangmaohai Link provides the fastest route to Jiangmen, forming part of a broader network of cross-sea and cross-river connections across the GBA.

This ambitious network is poised to accelerate the region's transformation into a world-class transportation hub, fostering deeper integration across industries, technology, culture, and tourism between the GBA and western Guangdong.

VentureOne Launches Nabat to Harness AI, Robotics for Mangrove Conservation in the UAE

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 12 (Bernama) -- VentureOne, backed by the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), introduced Nabat, a climate tech venture focused on conserving and restoring mangroves and other ecosystems using artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

This announcement was made at the International Mangrove Conservation and Restoration Conference in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Over the next seven years, Nabat plans to deploy drones, AI-powered software, and flexible seeding mechanisms to conserve and restore thousands of hectares of mangroves across the UAE, according to a statement.

Mangroves, known for storing five times more carbon than rainforest trees, play a crucial role in the UAE's ecosystem and in the global battle against climate change.

VentureOne Acting Chief Executive Officer, Reda Nidhakou explained that the core mission of the company is to launch startups that bring innovative, impactful technologies to the world.

Meanwhile, ATRC Secretary General, Faisal Al Bannai said Nabat exemplifies how the UAE is leveraging advanced technology to benefit humanity, stating that Nabat merges innovation and science to restore ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, and strengthen climate resilience as part of the country’s path to net-zero emissions.

Nabat’s AI and robotics enable precision mapping, seeding, and monitoring, ensuring conservation and restoration are tailored to each ecosystem’s unique and complex needs. Unlike traditional mangrove planting, which is labour-intensive and can even harm surrounding ecosystems, Nabat’s system touches habitats as lightly as possible.

Nabat’s advanced technology gathers detailed data on natural habitats and uses drones to plant seeds efficiently, monitoring their growth while reducing costs and ensuring scalability. The system is designed to reach hard-to-access areas, making conservation efforts more effective.

While the focus is initially on mangrove restoration in the UAE, the company plans to expand its efforts to other ecosystems, including deserts, farmland, forests, and coral reefs.

ONESIGHT ESSILORLUXOTTICA FOUNDATION JOINS WHO'S SPECS 2030 INITIATIVE FOR GLOBAL EYE HEALTH

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10 (Bernama) -- The OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation has collaborated with the World Health Organization (WHO) as a global partner on the WHO’s SPECS 2030 initiative.

This initiative builds on the world’s first-ever global target to increase effective refractive error coverage by 40 per cent by 2030, which was endorsed by WHO Member States in 2021 at the World Health Assembly.

OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation President and EssilorLuxottica Head of Mission, Anurag Hans highlighted the transformative potential of the collaboration, stating that 961 million people in some of the most remote communities now have access to vision care services within a day’s journey, and 84 million pairs of eyeglasses have been distributed to those in need thanks to the foundation’s efforts.

"Uncorrected poor vision affects 2.7 billion people worldwide, posing a significant challenge. By uniting WHO’s leadership in public health with our expertise in delivering innovative, on-the-ground solutions, we believe we can create a multiplier effect to extend vision care to even the most underserved regions,” he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, WHO Assistant Director-General, Universal Health Coverage, Communicable and Noncommunicable Diseases, Dr Jérôme Salomon emphasised the importance of collaborative action in achieving global eye health targets.

"Vision care is not just a health priority – it is a social and economic imperative. The SPECS 2030 initiative, which underpins the UN ‘Vision for Everyone’ resolution, reminds us that effective collaboration can amplify impact, delivering tangible results for communities worldwide," said Salomon.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to improving lives through better vision and advancing progress toward Sustainable Development Goals, especially in health, education, and economic participation.

The collaboration will focus on sharing knowledge, providing technical input, and enhancing data to improve global access to vision care, particularly in low-resource areas. Both organisations aim to implement the UN’s ‘Vision for Everyone’ resolution, addressing myopia, refractive errors, and social inclusion through sustainable solutions.

The WHO SPECS 2030 initiative accelerates global eye health efforts by focusing on five key pillars, namely services, improving access to refractive services; personnel, building the capacity of eye care professionals; education, promoting public awareness about eye health; cost, reducing the cost of eyeglasses and services; and surveillance, strengthening data collection and research.

Across these areas, the foundation will provide technical input, share best practices, and contribute data to inform WHO’s initiatives in alignment with the global eye care target of effective refractive error coverage.

Macao's Economic Diversification Reaches New Heights

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 (Bernama)  -- A recent graduate from California, Hui Ho-Kit has returned to his hometown in China’s Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) with a mission to introduce advanced robotics technology from the Chinese mainland.

Leveraging the resources and opportunities provided by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), he was able to establish his business and tap into the region's growing tech ecosystem, according to a statement.

Hui highlighted the collaborative advantages within the GBA, where each city leverages its unique strengths—Macao’s Portuguese ties, Hong Kong’s financial power, and Shenzhen’s leadership in smart manufacturing—creating an environment conducive to innovation and growth.

His journey symbolises the ongoing transformation in Macao, which is moving away from a gaming-dependent economy to embrace new industries.

Since its return to China in 1999, Macao has steadily diversified its economy, with the GBA playing a key role by providing resources to support sectors such as technology, finance, and culture. Currently, Macao is emerging as a centre for innovation, not just tourism.

Last November, the Macao SAR government released a development plan for 2024 to 2028, aimed at further diversifying the economy, with a focus on sectors such as high-tech industries, modern finance, and traditional Chinese medicine.

This plan aligns with the growing trend of tech innovation in the city, exemplified by increased revenue from industry-university-research collaborations and the rise in patents from Macao's higher education institutions. Macao also made strides in space exploration, launching its first space science satellite at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center last May.

Large-scale events, such as the International Fireworks Display Contest, the International Music Festival, and the Grand Prix, continue to attract millions of tourists each year, providing a fresh source of energy for Macao’s economy and helping reduce its reliance on gaming.

Additionally, infrastructure development, including the Guangdong-Macao Deep Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, has enhanced connectivity with neighbouring cities like Zhuhai. The high volume of daily cross-border traffic boosts trade, tourism, and collaboration, further strengthening Macao’s role as a regional hub.

Strategic land development and sustainable urban planning are also contributing to the city’s balanced growth within the GBA, ensuring continued economic prosperity.
