Innovation cluster Dongguan sees advent of tech giants

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Tech industry key figures and 6,000 developers recently gathered at the Songshan Lake in Dongguan, China for the Huawei Developers Conference 2019.

The three-day event beginning Aug 9, discussed the terminal industry, global application and development of 5G technology and construction of a global industrial ecosystem.

Among key figures were Huawei Consumer Business Group chief executive officer, Yu Chengdong and IFLYTEK chairman-in-office, Hu Yu.

The person in charge of Songshan Lake Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone Administrative Committee said Dongguan embraced more advanced technology enterprises, talents and innovative carriers with its ever-growing ability of incubating innovative companies and superior business environment.

Dongguan excels in commercialising scientific and technological achievements, with a complete industrial chain, sufficient skilled technicians and low land cost.

Meanwhile, incubators of Dongguan which help attract technology enterprises are bringing vitality and energy to the city's innovative ecosystem.

XBOTPARK, a start-up incubator focusing on robotics and smart hardware has linked resources including universities, research institutes, enterprises, upstream and downstream supply chains.

Uniphore raises US$51 million in Series C funding

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Uniphore, the global conversational AI technology company has raised US$51 million in Series C funding to accelerate its go-to-market in North America. (US$1 = RM 4.19).

The fund will also be used to invest in research and development for the next wave of innovation on the company’s platform and grow its talented employee base globally.

The fund is led by March Capital Partners, with participation from Chiratae Ventures (formerly IDG Ventures), Sistema Asia, CXO Fund, ITP, Iron Pillar, Patni Family and other investors.

According to a statement, the funding is Uniphore’s largest to date and marks one of the most substantial funding rounds in the conversational AI sector.

Uniphore chief executive officer and co-founder, Umesh Sachdev said: “With this new round of funding, we will be able to accelerate our global expansion and better serve our customers by developing and delivering innovative Conversational Service Automation (CSA) solutions to more organisations worldwide.”

Recently, Sachdev moved to Silicon Valley to expand the company’s reach in North America. The move has paved the way for several strategic new hires, including Annie Weckesser as chief marketing and people officer, and Jafar Syed as chief strategy & growth officer.

Last year, Uniphore experienced 300 per cent year-over-year growth and the year prior, it had an exciting Series B round with participation by various existing and new investors, including IDG Ventures, IIFL and JC2 Ventures.

Manulife Malaysia Empowers Orang Asli Children Through Education

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- Manulife Malaysia held the inauguration ceremony of the Orang Asli Education programme on July 27 at Kampung Sungai Ruai in Pahang.

Manulife Malaysia in a statement today said that the Orang Asli Education programme is in collaboration with Pertubuhan Komuniti Kasih Selangor(PKKS), a community welfare organisation, to assist Orang Asli children in the form of education support.

“The company’s financial support enables PKKS and teachers to conduct after-school learning sessions for the children and provide daily transportation of these children to their respective schools, as the villages are secluded from schools and public amenities,” the statement said.
