The program is designed to accelerate fusion power demonstration in the 2030s under Japan’s national energy and fusion strategies. It supports private-sector technology development across multiple fusion approaches, including tokamak, stellarator and laser fusion, with approximately JPY 60 billion in total government support anticipated over the three years through 2028.
The amount to be awarded to Helical Fusion will be announced following the formal grant decision.

For Helical Fusion, the selection represents an important step in advancing the Helix Program, its development roadmap toward fusion power generation in the 2030s.

Japan Accelerates Fusion from Research toward Industrial Deployment

Japan has strengthened its commitment to fusion energy as both a next-generation energy source and a strategic industry.

Under Japan’s national fusion strategy, the government aims to achieve fusion power demonstration in the 2030s while encouraging the development of multiple technological approaches. The METI program supports private-sector developers pursuing this goal through a milestone-based framework, under which progress is evaluated against defined technical and commercialization objectives.

The program calls for projects not only to demonstrate the technical feasibility of fusion power generation, but also to establish fundamental knowledge required for future commercial power plants. Safety, appropriate safety measures and engagement with host communities are also incorporated into the framework.

Against this backdrop, Helical Fusion is advancing a development strategy centered on the requirements that ultimately determine whether fusion can function as a power plant: steady-state operation, net electricity generation and maintainability.

Why Helical Fusion Is Pursuing the Stellarator

Helical Fusion is developing a Helical Stellarator, building on approximately 70 years of Helical Stellarator research and engineering in Japan.

Unlike pulsed approaches, the Helical Stellarator is designed for inherently steady-state operation. Helical Fusion believes this architecture offers a credible path toward simultaneously achieving the three requirements essential for commercially viable fusion power:

* Steady-state operation — stable operation capable of supporting continuous electricity generation
* Net electricity — generating sufficient electricity to deliver net power outside the plant
* Maintainability — enabling maintenance necessary to achieve high plant availability

The company was founded in 2021 as a spin-out leveraging research originating from Japan’s National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS), one of the world’s leading research institutions in stellarator fusion.

NIFS has accumulated extensive experimental knowledge through the Large Helical Device (LHD), including plasma operation lasting 3,268 seconds, plasma temperatures exceeding 100 million degrees Celsius, and advanced plasma control technologies.

Helical Fusion is translating this scientific foundation into engineering and hardware through the Helix Program.

The Helix Program: From Integrated Demonstration to Fusion Power

The Helix Program is Helical Fusion’s roadmap toward commercially viable fusion power in the 2030s.

The company is first developing and demonstrating two critical technology systems: high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets and an integrated blanket/divertor system.

These technologies will be brought together in Helix HARUKA, the Integrated Demonstration Device, followed by Helix KANATA, the company’s first power-generating fusion plant.

CGTN: China-Egypt Ties Deepen Through Trade, Investment

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- China-Egypt cooperation has expanded beyond major industrial projects to encompass broader trade, investment and strategic ties, with the Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone emerging as a key example of bilateral economic collaboration, according to an article published by China Global Television Network (CGTN).

A decade after the launch of its second phase, the China-Egypt TEDA Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone has grown into an industrial cluster of nearly 200 companies, creating about 10,000 jobs and attracting cumulative investment of more than US$4.7 billion, according to CGTN in a statement. The zone hosts companies in building materials, petroleum equipment, electrical equipment and machinery, linking China’s Belt and Road Initiative with Egypt’s development strategy for the Suez Canal Corridor.

The development reflects a broader evolution in bilateral ties from individual infrastructure projects towards cooperation spanning investment, employment and markets. During talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi recently, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for deeper cooperation and continued efforts to build a China-Egypt community with a shared future.

The Suez zone has also expanded into solar projects and circular economy initiatives, while Chinese-invested projects have supported Egypt’s power supply and provided training for local workers. At a joint venture between China XD Electric and Egyptian-owned EGEMAC, Egyptian employees account for 97 per cent of the workforce.

Trade is increasingly flowing in both directions, with China’s trade with Egypt reaching 95.19 billion Chinese yuan (US$14.16 billion) in the first seven months of 2026, up 18.7 per cent year on year. Chinese exports to Egypt rose 17.5 per cent, while imports from Egypt increased 49.4 per cent. 

Agricultural products have been a key driver of Egyptian exports to China, with Chinese imports of Egyptian agricultural products rising 82.6 per cent in the first seven months of 2026. Egypt was China’s largest source of frozen strawberries and third-largest source of flax during the period, while fresh Egyptian oranges are also gaining traction among Chinese consumers.

The two countries are marking 70 years of diplomatic ties, with cooperation extending into culture, education, science and technology, health and other fields. Egypt’s position as a major Arab and African country also gives the relationship broader regional significance, including through coordination in multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations and BRICS.

The partnership comes amid persistent instability in the Middle East, with Xi calling for greater regional autonomy in security, comprehensive approaches to regional hotspots, development to underpin security and stronger international coordination.

Coastal Protection Begins with Awareness: Yayasan PETRONAS Brings Communities and Students Together at Seberang Takir, Terengganu




TERENGGANU, Sept 2 (Bernama) -- Yayasan PETRONAS brought together volunteers and local communities at Pantai Seberang Takir to raise awareness of coastal protection and foster a shared responsibility for safeguarding Malaysia’s marine ecosystems.

In collaboration with the Terengganu State Education Department (JPNT), Kuala Terengganu City Council (MBKT), Green Growth Asia Foundation (GGAF) and the Seberang Takir community, the initiative was anchored on environmental education and community participation. It consisted of a beach clean-up and educational talks as practical platforms to help participants better understand the importance of healthy coastlines, marine biodiversity and responsible waste management.

The beach clean-up session involved 30 volunteers and 50 students from schools participating in the Eco-Schools programme, a GGAF initiative supported by Yayasan PETRONAS.

The participants collectively removed approximately 305 kilogrammes of waste and marine debris from the coastline.

Yayasan PETRONAS Chief Executive Officer, Hajah Shariah Nelly Francis, said, “Protecting the environment is a shared responsibility that requires the collective efforts of communities, educators, institutions and individuals. The outreach effort also saw educational talks and engagement sessions by Universiti Putra Malaysia, Persatuan Pemuliharaan dan Kajian Marin Malaysia and Geng Plastik Ija where experts shared insights to better understand how collective action, from reducing waste to protecting coastal habitats, can contribute to healthier and more resilient coastlines.

Bakers Delight Modernises Digital Marketing Systems and Accelerates Deployment Times With Boomi


KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 (Bernama) -- Boomi, the data activation company for artificial intelligence (AI), announced that Bakers Delight has modernised its digital marketing systems using the Boomi Enterprise Platform, significantly reducing the time required to roll out new systems.

In a statement, Boomi said the deployment has also given the Australian-owned bakery franchise greater agility to respond to changing market conditions.

Boomi Chief Technology Officer (CTO), APJ, David Irecki said Bakers Delight’s approach demonstrates how integration can serve as a strategic business capability to accelerate innovation and improve agility.

Meanwhile, Bakers Delight CTO, Keng Ng said the company needed a foundation that could support rapid, low-cost deployment of new systems while eliminating the cost and complexity of repeatedly re-engineering integrations.

The company, which operates more than 700 stores across Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States under the Bakers Delight and COBS Bread brands, is preparing for a major technology renewal in early 2027.

Bakers Delight implemented Boomi’s Data Hub and API Management capabilities across customer, product, store location, promotion, coupon and order processes, creating a reusable integration architecture that connects its digital marketing platforms without requiring major changes to core enterprise resource planning and point-of-sale systems.

PEREGRINE COLD LOGISTICS ENTERS INDONESIA WITH JOINT VENTURE

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 (Bernama) -- Peregrine Cold Logistics (Peregrine), Asia’s unified cold storage and logistics platform, has entered Indonesia through a joint venture with Indonesian real estate developer Sinar Primera to acquire and develop tier-one cold storage assets across the country.

The partnership combines the acquisition of an existing Sinar Primera-owned facility in Pluit with a new greenfield development in Narogong, expanding Peregrine’s cold chain footprint in Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

Peregrine co-founder and chief executive officer, Jeff Hogarth said the Indonesia entry marks a significant milestone in the company’s strategy to build an integrated international cold chain platform.

“Our objective is not simply to build capacity in Indonesia, but to connect the market into our broader ASEAN and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) network, creating a more integrated logistics solution for customers and a platform for long-term growth across the region,” he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Sinar Primera Group head, Hong Kah Jin said the partnership combines Peregrine’s cold chain expertise and international client base with Sinar Primera’s local market execution and infrastructure capabilities, supporting Indonesia’s growing demand for temperature-controlled infrastructure.

The partnership builds on Peregrine’s existing cold chain platform in the Philippines and is aimed at addressing rising demand for modern cold storage infrastructure in Indonesia, driven by rising incomes, urbanisation and increasingly sophisticated food and retail sectors.
