Last updated in 2019, Megahubs provides fresh insight into how ongoing travel disruptions are affecting global connectivity.

Gas, renewable energy integration to hasten asia's energy transition - Black & Veatch

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 (Bernama) -- As Asia races to expand its variable renewable energy generation, more integration of generation, transmission and distribution technologies will be required to balance electric grids, enhance energy security and reach decarbonisation goals.

“Rising demands from intensive power users like data centres and the electrification of transportation are increasing the load burden and profiles on Asia’s grid,” said Black & Veatch’s Executive Vice President & Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Narsingh Chaudhary.

“The electric industry can accelerate Asia’s energy transition by deploying existing and emerging decarbonisation, hydrogen, renewable and energy storage solutions.”

According to the Black & Veatch 2022 Asia Electric Report, senior industry executives viewed the integration of renewable energy into grid systems as the biggest challenge facing Asia’s electric industry.

One in four industry respondents revealed they were not confident in the performance and resilience of their transmission and distribution systems.

Additionally, top threats to providing reliable service to customers were cited as underinvestment in transmission and insufficient energy storage.

According to a statement, approximately half of survey respondents said they believed that over the next five years there would be “more investment” in gas or LNG-to-power facilities combined with carbon capture.

Meanwhile, separately, 46 per cent of respondents believed gas-fired generation would remain an important part of the grid beyond 2035.

The plan also includes assistance in the training of bilingual teachers and support for science education and experimental education at Taoyuan’s kindergartens, primary, and secondary schools.

The Preparatory Office was officially inaugurated by Taoyuan City mayor Cheng Wen-tsan and NTHU president W. John Kao. Mayor Cheng has played a key role in the early stages of the Hospital project.

The Hospital is expected to become a leading centre for the development of advanced cell regeneration technology.

Kao said this was a very important day for NTHU, in that the school had its sights set on medical education, and now the dream had finally come true.

Kao also noted that this year could be seen as the “year of medicine” at NTHU, since the first batch of medical students had recently been enrolled.

The Hospital will be located near the Hengshan Station (A16) of the Airport MRT line, on a parcel of land provided by Taoyuan City.

NTHU senior vice-president Lyu Ping-chiang said that the BOT agreement will be finalised by year-end, and that construction would start next year, soon after the parcel is transferred. The Hospital is expected to be completed by the end of 2027 and opened in 2028.

The Hospital will initially have 200 general acute care beds, plus an intensive care unit, a respiratory care unit, negative pressure isolation rooms, and a psychiatric unit for both inpatients and outpatients, all of which will be gradually expanded over a number of years.

iDA Singapore's Retail Ambassador Program to address retail talent shortage

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- In July, iDA Singapore (iDA’SG), the Singapore branch of World Mode Holdings (WMH), a Japanese group that provides diverse solutions to the fashion and beauty industries, began to hire retail professionals and develop their skills through a unique training programme to counter the human resource challenges facing ASEAN companies and job applicants in the retail industry.

The Retail Ambassador Program was launched to connect professional retail staff with various companies in a flexible way that meets job requirements, such as length of employment, skill set and experience as a full-time employee.

According to a statement, the target of its initial recruitment drive is 1,000 workers, though the programme is intended to be expanded based on feedback from companies and job applicants.

The rise of e-commerce in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic and the return of foreign workers to their home countries have further exacerbated the shortage oftalent in the retail industry. For staff, this has meant being exposed to an unstable employment environment while also receiving good benefits.

iDA’SG has launched the Retail Ambassador Program to address the issues that arise from these practices. Through this initiative, iDA’SG hires staff looking forwork in the retail industry and develops their skills through a unique training programme. By simply issuing a request to iDA’SG, companies can secure the most suitable human resources for their working environment, without needing to conduct their own recruitment processes.

In Japan, iDA has served more than 1,200 clients, including luxury brands, and 280,000 registered candidates over 20 years. Many customers and job applicants are already taking advantage of this programme.

iDA’SG believes in continuous learning and skills development and has developed a number of educational courses on topics such as beauty, personal development and visual merchandising to ensure our responsiveness to the ever-changing retail industry.

These training programs develop the skills of professional retail staff, enabling them to be Retail Ambassadors who can be assets to their workplaces from day one and contribute to an improvement in customer service.

CLOUDFLARE MAKES R2 STORAGE AVAILABLE TO ALL; PROVIDES DEVELOPERS EASY AND SCALABLE STORAGE WITHOUT THE EGRESS FEES

Now generally available for developers looking to focus on innovation rather than worrying about the cost of storing and accessing data

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 22 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- Cloudflare, Inc. (NYSE: NET), the security, performance, and reliability company helping to build a better Internet, today announced that Cloudflare R2 Storage, the distributed object storage that eliminates egress costs, is now generally available. Cloudflare R2 Storage offers a better way for developers to store and access everything they need. Whether it's storage for large media files, logs, or delivery of web assets, Cloudflare R2 offers flexibility with zero egress fees. R2 gives developers both an S3-compatible API, making for seamless migration and a powerful integration with Cloudflare Workers, Cloudflare’s highly scalable serverless computing platform. Developers can focus on innovating—building the applications and websites they need—instead of worrying about high storage costs or vendor lock-in.

“Egress fees are nothing but a tax on developers, stifling innovation and creativity. We are redefining the standard of how developers work with object storage, allowing them to focus on innovation, rather than the costs of accessing their data. That is why R2 Storage will never have egress fees,” said Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare. “Cloudflare’s mission is to help build a better Internet, which means we're focused on making the Internet faster, safer, and also more affordable for everyone. We have been blown away by the initial interest in R2 Storage, and we encourage any developer that wants a better type of storage to sign up and switch to R2 today.”

In order to build websites and applications, developers need a place to store large amounts of unstructured data, photos, videos, and graphics that is quickly and easily accessible. However, many cloud providers today charge increasingly egregious bandwidth pricing for developers to access their data, resulting in unnecessarily expensive cloud storage, vendor lock-in, and an inability for developers to easily use the data they have stored. Cloudflare R2 Storage frees developers from this vendor lock-in with automatic migration of data from S3-compatible services to Cloudflare’s highly performant, object store—minus the egress fees.

TRILLIANT IMPLEMENTS WIRELESS WATER METERING SOLUTION IN CANADA

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 (Bernama) -- Trilliant, a leading international provider of solutions for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), smart grid, smart cities and IIOT, has announced the successful implementation of a wireless water metering solution in Canada, confirming its position to support challenging metering projects where strong, reliable connectivity is required.

Provident, an energy services and submetering company in the Greater Toronto Area specialising in the multi-residential market, selected Trilliant’s Smart Water solution for a project in Toronto, Ontario, that required a basement metering solution for a number of townhomes.

The installation of utility meters can often be a complex process with many considerations, including supply chain challenges, wiring of equipment and other factors.

The Provident project uses Trilliant technology to enable the connection of water meters to a water meter interface unit (MIU), which can be programmed to interface with any available meter across a multitude of brands. The access point reads the MIUs wirelessly, eliminating the need to run wires through floors and walls.

“In utilising Trilliant’s technology in buildings, customers can count on reliable connectivity without the overhead chatter and power consumption typical of other RF devices. Battery-powered devices ease installation and support a multitude of meter choices, putting customers like Provident in full control of their assets,” said Steven Lupo, Managing Director, Canada at Trilliant in a statement.

“Trilliant’s solutions are easy to deploy in residential and commercial developments, and can provide connectivity for not just water metering, but also for electrical and thermal applications, all while reducing or eliminating the overhead costs, risks, and maintenance that come with wired installations.”

Meanwhile, Provident Energy Management Inc President, Ralph Simone adds: “Provident is committed to providing the very best in service to our customers.

“To do so, we rely on cutting-edge technology and solutions like Trilliant’s Smart Water platform to enable our business.”

The solution for Provident was deployed on Trilliant’s AMI platform, ideally suited for hard-to-reach and battery-sensitive devices. Trilliant’s Smart Water solution is a key part of Trilliant’s smart building initiative and is revolutionising connectivity in buildings while empowering building owners to better manage infrastructure without intrusive wired installations.

5G FIXED WIRELESS ACCESS YIELDS US$2.5 BILLION OPERATOR REVENUE BY 2023 - JUNIPER RESEARCH

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 (Bernama) -- Total operator-billed revenue generated from 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services will rise from US$515 million in 2022 to US$2.5 billion next year, according to a new study by Juniper Research. (US$1 = RM4.547)

This staggering growth will be driven by 5G’s advanced network capabilities, such as ultra-low delay and increased data processing to provide connectivity services that were previously unachievable with 4G technology, according to a statement.

FWA includes services that provide high-speed Internet connectivity through cellular‑enabled Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) for uses including broadband and IoT networks.

The research predicts that operators’ 5G FWA revenue will reach US$24 billion globally by 2027. It identified the consumer market as the sector generating the highest revenue for operators; representing 96 per cent of global 5G FWA revenue.

However, it warns that operators must provide a compelling user proposition for FWA solutions through the bundling of services such as video streaming, gaming and smart home security to enrich user experience and gain competitive advantage against incumbent high‑speed connectivity technologies, such as Fibre‑to‑the‑Property (FTTP).

The report also identified private networks as a key monetisation opportunity; offering superior network capabilities over 4G. Smart manufacturing, shipping ports and airports are the key use cases for 5G FWA.

It recommends that operators use 5G FWA to facilitate the last mile-solution by treating the relationship between FWA and fibre networks as wholly collaborative to maximise network performance and return on investment.

NTHU interdisciplinary research team unveils secret to success

Chou Yu-Ju (left) and Kuo Tsung-Han have found that social dominance is not so much determined by who is stronger, but rather by who is willing to yield. (Photo: National Tsing Hua University)

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19 (Bernama) -- Cross-species research conducted by an interdisciplinary research team at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) led by professors Yu-Ju Chou from the Department of Early Childhood Education and Tsung-Han Kuo from the Institute of Systems Neuroscience has found that the social hierarchies of children and mice are similarly formed at an early age.

Surprisingly, they discovered that these hierarchies are not so much determined by who is stronger, but rather by who is willing to yield, according to a statement.

Their research was published in iScience, a sub-journal of Cell. They suggest that parents and teachers should pay close attention to social interaction among children, and provide extra guidance and encouragement to timid or submissive children.

The experiment used to identify young mouse hierarchy is a “tube test”, in which one mouse is forced to retreat by an opponent into a narrow tube.

The team also conducted behavioural experiments on preschoolers and attained similar results. Chou said that the children who won the competition didn’t really need to exert too much effort.

The losers either readily gave up or were easily convinced to acquiesce by their opponents. While some children were able to dominate the game by commending others, submissive children were less persistent and more likely to retreat.

The study was sponsored by the Office of Research and Development. The merger of NTHU with National Hsinchu University of Education six years ago resulted in extensive cooperation, including this exemplary research.

In a follow-up project, Chou and Kuo teamed up with Dr Shi-Bing Yang from Academia Sinica and found a positive correlation between hierarchy and memory. The study showed that memory-improving drugs can enhance not only memory but also social dominance in mice.

It also suggested that children with a better memory are good at adopting social strategies and recognising dominant facial cues, which is conducive to leadership. This research has recently been published in the journal Communications Biology.
