Trilliant, Manx Utilities to commence smart electricity meters roll-out across the Isle of Man

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- Trilliant and its partner Manx Utilities, are progressing with the first phase of the roll-out of Smart Electricity Meters for 8,000 prepayment customers across the Isle of Man.

A leading international provider of solutions for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), smart grid, smart cities and IIoT, Trilliant has also launched similar island deployments in Aruba, Malaysia and the Dominican Republic.

According to a statement, this partnership enables smart capabilities for the Island by replacing their existing electricity meters with a new AMI platform.

It will provide connectivity for nearly 50,000 residential, industrial, and commercial customers with expansion options available to enable additional smart grid technologies in the future such as smart street lighting.

The infrastructure upgrades have begun with 8,000 prepayment customers, whose legacy ‘key’ electricity meters are being replaced with smart meters. The meters operate on a ‘pay as you go’ system that customers can access using Manx Utilities’ SmarterLiving app.

In the app, prepayment customers can see updates on their energy usage and top up their credit, allowing them to gain greater visibility and understanding of their electricity consumption, which could help them to save on energy costs.

The smart meters will notify Manx Utilities about power outages and energy use patterns. The electricity provider will be able to reduce waste by fine-tuning energy production based on insights from the smart electricity system.

Following the priority roll-out of smart meters to Manx Utilities’ prepayment customers, upgrades will start for the remaining domestic, commercial and industrial locations.

"CAMBRIDGE OF THE EAST" SHINES: GLOBAL-MINDED ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY PLAYS A GROWING ROLE IN PUSHING SDGS

ZJU working on 17 SDGs

HANGZHOU, China, Nov. 30, 2022 /Xinhua-AsiaNet/--

The Sixteenth General Conference of The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS) was held in a hybrid format from November 21 to 24.

Hundreds of scientists -- including TWAS fellows, TWAS Young Affiliates and Alumni, ministers of science and technology, and dignitaries from all over the world -- gathered in an online and offline meeting in Hangzhou, the capital of China's eastern coastal province of Zhejiang.

In the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development set by the United Nations, they discussed how to leverage basic sciences to promote evidence-based decision-making and sustainable development in developing countries.

The offline event was held at one of China's most desirable universities, Zhejiang University (ZJU), which renowned British scientist Dr. Joseph Needham hailed as "Cambridge of the East".

The reason why this Chinese institution of higher learning is entitled to host such a heavyweight international conference is not only because of its 125-year history and academic heritage, but also because of its long-standing commitment to social responsibility and global commitment as an important starting point and goal of talent cultivation, scientific research and social service.

As a leading comprehensive research university, ZJU's research achievements in many basic science fields contribute to the realization of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In the medical field, the world's first human cell landscape at single-cell level was born in ZJU in 2020, whose research method will have a profound impact on the identification of normal and disease cell states in the human body, and is expected to help doctors identify abnormal cell states and origins in the future.

Ye Ming'er, associate professor of horticulture at ZJU, has been named "Food Hero" by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for his constant efforts in promoting fruit tree technology for over 30 years. His innovative approach has boosted growth and yield of several fruits, increasing farmers' income as well as protecting natural resources.

"We have also built a healthy eco-environment at the orchard, where sheep feed on grass and its dung is in turn used as fertilizers for fruit trees, thus protecting the environment and ensuring the food safety," said Ye.

In helping coping with climate change, China's first artificial upwelling demonstration project, led by ZJU and completed with other domestic peers, is capable of boosting phytoplankton and algae yield, restoring the marine ecological environment, and enhancing marine carbon sinks. It has been listed as a marine carbon sink program by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The list goes on. In recent years, ZJU has integrated the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development into all aspects of its development, focusing on cultivating students' sustainable development competence, enriching academic ecology, strengthening interdisciplinary research, and promoting global coordination and cooperation.

In March 2021, ZJU launched the Global ZJU for Social Good (Z4G) to integrate the university's own development into the global agenda, contribute its part to the implementation of the UN SDGs in China, and help build a Chinese model of sustainable development.

After the release of the Z4G, ZJU held a series of activities to walk its talk. At the end of that month, ZJU, together with more than 50 leading universities in the world including Harvard University, issued the Joint Statement of Global University Leaders on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This is the first global initiative for sustainable development initiated by a Chinese university.

In April this year, ZJU, together with three overseas universities, jointly held the first Asia-Pacific Carbon Neutrality Symposium online, featuring robust discussions on carbon capture, utilization and sequestration, sustainable energy, and sustainable city and construction. The online meeting played a role in promoting cross-institutional knowledge sharing in the Asia-Pacific region and solutions to major global challenges.

Four months later, ZJU joined hands with its global partners to launch the SDG Global Summer School, which attracted nearly 1,000 outstanding students from more than 80 countries and regions around the world to participate online.

They exchanged views with top scholars at home and abroad. Discussions were conducted over such issues as post-COVID-19 urban governance and building a safe and sustainable food supply chain, contributing their parts to a better future for the world.

Stephanie Ann, a summer school participant from Singapore, spoke highly of the Carbon Neutrality module. "The holistic approach to climate change is what makes the ZJU SDG Summer School very insightful. The lecturers, assignments and group tasks not only allow us to apply the knowledge we have learnt, but also propel us to ponder and explore the topics on our own."

At the TWAS 16th General Conference, Hangzhou Declaration was unveiled in addition to the pooling of ideas and solutions on SDGs and basic sciences. The declaration calls on all stakeholders to join hands, uphold the concept of open science, strengthen South-South and North-South cooperation, and work together to open up new prospects for global basic sciences development.

"In the future, we look forward to working with you to advocate for inclusive and green development, enhance basic sciences and multidisciplinary research, nurture top-notch innovative talent in basic sciences and further deepen international engagement," said Ren Shaobo, Chairman of the University Council of ZJU, at the opening ceremony of the Conference.

"Thus, we are hoping to scale up higher education's distinctive contributions to the common development of mankind and the lasting prosperity of our society," Ren added.

Boomi completes independent assessment of cloud security controls for Australian govt

Australia’s IRAP Assessment Recognizes Boomi to Provide Comprehensive Security Controls (Graphic: Business Wire)

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- Boomi, the intelligent connectivity and automation leader, announced the Boomi AtomSphere Platform has been independently assessed for cloud security against the Australian government’s Information Security Manual (ISM) PROTECTED controls.

The assessment was conducted within the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) Information Security Registered Assessors Programme (IRAP) – a common framework recognised by Australian government agencies to assess a vendor’s security posture – continuing Boomi’s momentum in the government market.

Boomi director, Australia and New Zealand, Nathan Gower said in a statement that having the necessary standards for data protection and cybersecurity in place, across agencies and jurisdictions, is important in today’s cloud world.

“Completing our IRAP assessment is a validation that our technology is available to Australia’s public sector and can safely operate at a protected level within their cloud environments.”

Assessment at PROTECTED level recognises Boomi to provide comprehensive security controls in system design and operational effectiveness across its low-code integration platform as a service (iPaaS).

Boomi’s security posture for storing, processing, and communicating information allows government agencies to purchase the Boomi AtomSphere Platform without needing to complete their own independent assessments.

Further, it supports commercial outreach with several Australian enterprises recognising IRAP as the gold standard for cloud security assessment.

Boomi recently set the industry record for the largest customer base among integration platform vendors, added world-class leaders and continued to expand its global footprint.

YUM SAYS THE DECISION TO FORM A SOLID GOVERNMENT IS OF UTMOST URGENT FOR MALAYSIA'S ECONOMIC STABILITY

Nitesh Malani, Founder and Chairman, Yayasan Usahawan Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- With the challenging global economic situation expected to worsen in 2023-2024, Yayasan Usahawan Malaysia and the business community are hoping that a solid and stable government can be formed quickly without delay. Malaysians have voted and want stability and continued economic growth to position Malaysia as the ASEAN economy hub.

“Prolonged political instability and a hung Parliament will affect the country’s economy. Investors will also hold back until a government is formed. A government is needed fast to steer the nation’s economy post-election,” said Nitesh Malani, Chairman of Yayasan Usahawan Malaysia.

“Bursa Malaysia has been plundered with billions of losses within the past three days post-GE15. After a certain coalition announced that it was ready to form the government after the results of the elections were known, the stock exchange plummeted to levels that we as a nation can't afford now. This is usually an indication of what the business community wants. Foreign investors will not be comfortable pouring funds into our country if the government of the day does not have a strong mandate from the people and a stable government. After the (Prime Minister and MPs) are sworn in, investors will evaluate and consider whether or not to invest in Malaysia or look to others in the region. We shall lose the competitive advantage,” he said.

Bursa Malaysia has seen a three-day losing streak before GE15 polling day and continues with a weak start on Monday. Local stock market investors are dumping shares in early trade as Malaysia faces a hung Parliament situation after the 15th general election.

Nitesh suggested that the new government should form an economic advisory committee comprising industry experts and business-related non-governmental organisations that includes leaders of the next generation, like Khairy Jamaluddin and Nurul Izzah, in such advisory roles.

“Whichever coalition becomes the government should have leaders who can deliver good governance and an investor-friendly environment. Otherwise, we will lose out when the foreign and domestic investors look at other regional locations,” he added.

As a champion for SMEs, Yayasan Usahawan Malaysia will be hosting its 7th SME and Entrepreneurs Business Awards (SEBA), with the theme “SEBA: RISE UP” to encourage SMEs to climb uphill against all odds. The awards presentation gala will be held on the 8th of December, 2022, at the Grand Ballroom, Shangri-La Hotel.

GLOBAL ALLIANCE OF BANKS CALLS OUT 'GREENWASHING'

The Global Financial Sector Is Urged To Back Up Their ‘Big Words’ With Real Actions As The Climate Crisis Accelerates

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- On the eve of the COP27 Climate Change Conference in Egypt (6-18 November), a leading global network of values-based banks calls upon the financial sector to back up its rhetoric with actions. The Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV) will mark Banking On Values Day on 10 November 2022 by reaffirming the crucial role that banks have to play in tackling the root causes of climate change.

At the occasion of the COP27 ‘Finance Day’, the GABV urges the financial sector, including valuesbased banks, to live up to its commitments. At last year’s COP26 Conference in Glasgow, UK, mainstream financial institutions issued welcome public commitments and declarations designed to tackle climate change and help facilitate the move towards net zero. One year later, many of them continue financing the fossil fuel industry at an industrial scale. A recent report by Finance Watch estimates that 60 of the largest global banks still have around USD 1.35 trillion of exposure to fossil fuel assets.

Martin Rohner, Executive Director, GABV: “Banking is never neutral - institutions make decisions about what they finance and invest in, and these have major impacts on the shape of our collective future. Over recent years, mainstream banks have increasingly positioned themselves around their social purpose and environmental goals. Now, this rhetoric must be backed up by real commitments and action.

"TICK TOCK, TICK TOCK" OUTDOOR PUBLIC ART EXHIBITION NOW ON VIEW UNTIL JAN 1, 2023

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- Presented by First Initiative Foundation (FIF) and supported by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, "Tick Tock, Tick Tock" is now on view until Jan 1, next year.

The large-scale public art exhibition is located next to an iconic landmark, the Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower, featuring renowned American artist WhIsBe's largest art piece to date, a giant red sculpture standing over eight metres high.

“After visiting Hong Kong a few years ago, I was inspired by the landscape and challenged with how I could integrate my work into the city’s identity.

“I am excited to return to Hong Kong with the next evolution of the Vandal Gummy, a brand-new installation incorporating digital and interactive elements,” said WhIsBe.

According to a statement, the three-storey-high sculpture combines the modern gummy bear with prehistoric dinosaurs, along with another two-metre-plus tall teal sculpture set on the Victoria Harbour waterfront.

The harbour’s glittering, shimmering water surface is part of the display via a special mirror/chrome coating effect on the sculpture, incorporating technological elements such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Instagram filters, allowing the public to capture sweet moments.

In this latest artwork, WhIsBe replaced his signature physical plaque with an LED screen for the first time, on which a variety of videos are shown.

This includes a countdown timer that syncs with the hourly chime from the Clock Tower, and memorable moments collected from the Hong Kong public by FIF, highlighting the relationship between public art and the local community.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- The trial run of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway (HSR) line between Tegalluar station and Casting Yard No. 4 was successfully conducted on Nov 16.

According to a statement today, the HSR line is a landmark project under the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and represents the first overseas application of a full Chinese high-speed railway system.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Chinese President Xi Jinping witnessed the occasion on the sidelines of a bilateral meeting following the G20 Summit in Bali.

It said that in addition to offering more commuting convenience to the local people, the project is expected to deliver a huge boost to Indonesia's economic development and social progress, and help upgrade the country's railway technology and related industries, which is a win-win situation for both sides.

During the trial run, the high-speed railway comprehensive inspection trains conducted comprehensive inspections on subgrade, track, communication, signal, traction power supply and other systems.

“All obtained indicators suggested good performance, marking the success of the first trial operation of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway jointly developed by China and Indonesia,” it said.

With a designed speed of 350 km per hour, the line will cut the journey time between Jakarta and Bandung, Indonesia's fourth-largest city, from over three hours to around 40 minutes.

It said that China's energy infrastructure giant PowerChina - one of the developers of the HSR that undertook the laying of 279.4 km main track - revealed that its total contract value under construction in Indonesia has exceeded US$3 billion. (US$1=RM4.58)

It added that the company is also committed to the development and construction of local green energy projects in Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam, the Philippines and other regions and countries.

AM BEST AFFIRMS CREDIT RATINGS OF VIETNAM'S PETROLIMEX INSURANCE

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- Global credit rating agency AM Best has affirmed Vietnam's Petrolimex Insurance Corporation (PJICO) financial strength rating of "B++" (good) and long-term issuer credit rating of “bbb” (good).

The credit ratings reflect PJICO’s strong balance sheet strength, as well as its adequate operating performance, neutral business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management.

In a statement, AM Best said PJICO’s balance sheet strength assessment is underpinned by its risk-adjusted capitalisation, as measured by Best’s Capital Adequacy Ratio, which is expected to remain at the strongest level over the medium term.

The company’s balance sheet strength assessment is supported by the stability of its capital adequacy and moderate net underwriting leverage.

It had also maintained a generally conservative investment strategy, with the majority of investments held in cash and term deposits.

AM Best assessed PJICO’s operating performance as adequate, as evidenced by a five-year average combined ratio of 97.7 per cent and return-on-equity ratio of 12.2 per cent (2017-2021).

“PJICO’s underwriting performance improved in 2021 compared with the previous year, driven in part by lower claims experience -- given COVID-19-related mobility restriction measures in Vietnam -- and higher net earned premiums from premiums reserve release," it said.

AM Best views PJICO’s business profile as neutral, noting that in 2021, PJICO ranked as the fifth-largest non-life insurer in Vietnam, with a market share of approximately six per cent of gross premium written.

“The company’s business profile benefits from its common branding and preferential access to cargo business arising from its largest non-majority shareholder, Vietnam National Petroleum Group (Petrolimex)," it added.
