KAWASAKI, Japan, Feb 28 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation ("Toshiba") has launched “TB9083FTG,” a gate-driver IC[1] for automotive brushless DC motors used in applications such as electric power steering (EPS), electric brakes and shift-by-wire. Volume shipments start today.

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20230227005014/en/

Automotive equipment must deliver a performance that meets the requirements of ISO 26262, the functional safety standards for road vehicles. Semiconductor chips and electronic components installed in automotive equipment are no exception to this.
The new product TB9083FTG controls and drives external N-channel power MOSFETs for driving a three-phase brushless DC motor. It is highly capable against the ISO 26262 2nd edition functional safety[2] and supports ASIL-D[3] for use in highly safety-critical automotive systems. This makes the new product ideal for automotive applications using brushless DC motors, such as EPS, electric brakes and shift-by-wire.

For systems requiring safety relays such as EPS, TB9083FTG has a built-in three-channel gate-driver for the safety relays that control and drive the relays for motors and power supply. This eliminates the need for external components and helps reduce the part count.

TB9083FTG is housed in a P-VQFN48-0707-0.50-005 package with a wettable flank[4] structure. This allows visual inspection of solder joints using an automatic optical inspection (AOI) system, and contributes to improved solder joint reliability.
In addition, Toshiba has verified that it can go through 3000 cycles in the mounting temperature cycling test and has obtained data that will allow customers to use this QFN package with full confidence.

By using a small package ((7.0mm x 7.0mm (typ.)), the mounting area has been reduced by approximately 66% against the current product [5]. This helps to control the increase in the mounting area, as the number of electronic components on ECU boards tends to rise due to redundant designs that are effective in ensuring higher levels of safety.

Toshiba will continue to steadily introduce improved functions that match the requirements of ISO 26262 2nd edition into gate-driver IC for automotive three-phase brushless DC motors, and to contribute to the electrification and safety enhancement of automotive equipment.

Applications

Automotive equipment
  • Electric power steering (EPS), electric braking, shift-by-wire, various types of pump, etc.
Features
  • 3 channels of drivers for safety relays
  • Adoption of a small package reduces the mounting area by approximately 66%[5]
  • Built-in self-diagnosis circuit for external MOSFETs

Notes:
[1]Driver to drive MOSFET
[2]Functional safety standards seek to minimize risk caused by system failures. It is important to ensure that interested parties can be offered a reasonable explanation of the safety of a system. FourKites: 50 pct shippers have zero visibility into ocean freight

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 (Bernama) -- A new study by FourKites revealed that the past few years of supply chain disruptions including COVID-19, market volatility, global political conflict, material shortages and extreme weather events have driven 73 per cent of respondents to invest in supply chain visibility, with 46 per cent planning to invest more this year.

In a statement, FourKites said other key survey findings included 50 per cent of respondents reported having zero visibility into their ocean freight, with more than 20 per cent relying on manual track-and-trace processes to track their ocean freight.

More than half of respondents were most concerned about labour challenges, high shipping costs and impacts to customer service, with 35 per cent also reporting concerns around congestion at the ports whilst 73 per cent of respondents reported having some level of visibility into their over-the-road (OTR) shipping.

The survey findings have been published in the report titled The Great Reset: Ocean Shipping in a Post-Pandemic World that includes expert analysis on the current state of ocean shipping, predictions for 2023 and ways shippers can shore up their supply chains to build resilience for the future.

VentureSoftPM founder and an industry expert, Chris Stauber said shippers and other players in the supply chain ecosystem are getting smarter about allocations by tapping into more reliable and real-time data, instead of guessing.

“They want to know, for instance, what the risk-versus-reward will be for going to an extra port or country to move their containers, or for shifting from one supplier to three for raw supplies. Additional investment is required to get better data, but the value of that data brings a huge reduction in risk,” he said.

FourKites’ has seen continued growth in its ocean visibility business over the past year with now tracking 98 per cent of global ocean container traffic across more than 270 lanes and 120 carriers, across every container port in North America and all major ports in Europe.

Over the last 12 months, FourKites has tracked more than 1.3 million ocean shipments, a 163 per cent increase in ocean volume year-over-year (yoy) and has seen 70 per cent growth in ocean customers yoy, with customers now including Cardinal Health, LyondellBasell and McCain Foods.

The survey polled over 350 supply chain professionals to shed light on the top issues facing the ocean shipping industry.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) research team in Taiwan has captured an instant moment in the nanoworld by producing attosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses.

This light source can work as a nano camera to capture images of 5-nanometer-scale objects that move at an extremely high speed, such as an electron.

NTHU in a statement said this technology is expected to advance the design of next-generation transistors and memory chips with significantly increased speed for computers and communications.

Led by Associate Professor Ming-Chang Chen of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Associate Professor Ming-Wei Lin of the Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Science, the team is world’s first which developed a high-efficiency pulse compression technology for compressing a ytterbium-doped laser to 3,000 attoseconds.

When this light source was further focused into an inert gas, it produced extreme ultraviolet pulses with a duration of only 290 attoseconds.

Patents for this innovative technology have been applied for in the United States, Europe and Taiwan, and the team's research has been published by the top journal Science Advances.

With the goal of greatly reducing the pulse duration, the team focuses on developing a “spectrum broadening and pulse compression” technology by first stimulating more light waves of different frequencies in the space and then aligning the peaks of these new waves to superimpose them.

Repeating this process of spectral broadening and compression can subsequently shorten the pulse duration and increase the pulse peak.

The pulse duration can be compressed from 160,000 attoseconds to 290 attoseconds with a remarkable compression ratio of 550 via this technology.

2023 POSITIVE GROWTH FOR TOURISM ARRIVAL IN THE COMMONWEALTH OF DOMINICA

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7 (Bernama) -- Discover Dominica, the tourism office for the Commonwealth of Dominica has reported a significant increase in 2022 tourism arrival numbers, projecting even stronger growth in 2023.

“We are still working toward recovery as we are not yet back to pre-pandemic numbers, but we are in a good place as we begin 2023 with strong bookings throughout the winter travel season.

“In 2023, Dominica remains focused on its sustainability efforts, an increasingly popular selling point of the island,” said Discover Dominica Chief Executive Officer, Colin Piper.

According to a statement, Dominica welcomed 60,704 visitors last year as compared to 14,888 visitors in 2021, indicating a 308 per cent increase.

Contributing factors to this growth include relaxed COVID protocols, increasing demand for post-pandemic travel, the announcement that as of Feb 4, 2023, American Airlines will be operating four flights weekly to the country and its recognition as the top Caribbean destination by international travel publishers.

“The addition of the American Airlines flight had a significant impact on our tourism arrivals. It has never been faster or easier for US visitors to travel to and from Dominica and also is a valuable addition for the diaspora community,” added Piper.

Last year was a historic moment for the island as there were repeat visitors and new visitors to the Caribbean Island due to the demand for exciting travel experiences that are on the rise as Dominica has also just opened its sustainable luxury resort, Coulibri Ridge and achieved its first in-person World Creole Music Festival.

Not only is the island considered a top destination thanks to its tranquil beaches and breathtaking views, but there are also endless opportunities for entrepreneurs in the travel and tourism, and hospitality industries.

These entrepreneurs can also gain the coveted citizenship of Dominica by investing in its Citizenship by Investment programme in which investors can either invest via the Economic Diversification Fund or purchase approved real-estate.

Launched in 1993, Dominica’s Citizenship by Investment programme has been ranked as the number one CBI initiative for six consecutive years by the CBI Index, a ranking system published by the Financial Times’s Professional Wealth Management (PWM) magazine.

OPERATOR 5G REVENUE REACHES US$625 BLN WORLDWIDE BY 2027 - JUNIPER RESEARCH

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7 (Bernama) -- A new study by Juniper Research revealed that operators are expected to generate revenue of US$625 billion from 5G services globally by 2027, up from US$310 billion in 2023. (US$1 = RM4.30)

According to a new report titled Operator Revenue Strategies: Business Models, Emerging Technologies & Market Forecasts 2023-2027, this growth of 100 per cent over the next four years will be driven by the migration of mobile subscriptions to 5G networks, and the increasing inclusion of eSIMs in devices such as laptops and Wi-Fi hotspots.

The research forecasted that 80 per cent of global operator-billed service revenue will be attributable to 5G by 2027; allowing operators to secure a return on investment into their 5G networks.

The increasing implementation of eSIMs into new devices, nonetheless will drive global cellular data traffic to grow by over 180 per cent between 2023 and 2027, as data traffic is offloaded from fixed and Wi-Fi networks to 5G.

Its research author, Frederick Savage said eSIM-capable devices would drive significant growth in cellular data, as consumers leverage cellular networks for use cases that have historically used fixed networks.

“Operators must ensure that networks, including 5G and upcoming 6G networks, are future‑proofed by implementing new technologies across the entirety of networks,” he said in a statement.

The report foresees 6G standards adopting innovative technologies that are not currently used in 5G standards in order to meet the growing demand for cellular data.

It identified Non‑Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) and sub-1THz frequency bands as key technologies that must be at the centre of initial trials and tests of 6G networks, to provide increased data capabilities over existing 5G networks.

NTT COM LAUNCHES RENEWED SKYWAY SDK FOR MORE VERSATILE DEVELOPMENT OF ONLINE COMMUNICATION SERVICES

TOKYO,  Feb 2 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the ICT solutions and international communications business within the NTT group, announced today the immediate launch of the renewed SkyWay software development kit (SDK). The new SkyWay SDK makes it easier than ever to implement real-time voice, video and data communication for applications and websites.

People interested planning or developing online communication services may apply to attend a free webinar in person (50 people) or online (100 people) to learn about the renewed SkyWay SDK at NTT Communications' Tokyo headquarters from 3:00pm (JST) on February 23.

Simple to use and supported with extensive documentation, SkyWay does not require special technical skills or knowledge of voice/video communication or constructing servers, and can be used for a wide range of applications, such as online lessons, IoT and robots. To date, SkyWay has been deployed for the development of more than 20,000 services.

SkyWay is suitable for diverse call formats including voice and video, one-to-one and group calls, and video communication while sharing screens. It also is a multiplatform SDK for developing communication services suited to specific industries and business categories. SkyWay assures high-quality real-time communication, as evidenced by its service uptime rate of 99.96% in fiscal 2021. It also achieves high-quality overseas calls by setting up servers to relay communications to/from Asia, North America and Europe.¹ What's more, SkyWay may be used at no charge for service verification and development until the users service is actually launched. Furthermore, fees are adjusted to the scale of service and billing is implemented on a pay-as-you-go billing basis.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, online communication has rapidly diversified and now commonly includes events involving dozens of people as well as communication robots. In response, NTT Com decided to upgrade SkyWay's architecture and release it as a new service with enhanced functions for increased versatility, including:

·  More simultaneous callers (expanded from 20 to 100 max.)
·  Terminal load reduction according to end-user environment (simulcasting and API for flexible media transmission/reception, such as only specific video/audio)
·  Authentication and authorization for controlling transmission of video/audio to each end user

The following are two examples of SkyWay's expanded functionality.

THREATLOCKER UNLEASHES OPS TO DETECT THREATS

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 (Bernama) -- ThreatLocker, a pioneer in endpoint protection technologies, has launched ThreatLocker Ops, a community-driven threat detection tool at the Zero Trust World being held for three days, ending Feb 3.

In a statement, ThreatLocker said the new product assists administrators to detect attempted breaches or weaknesses in their systems.

ThreatLocker Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Danny Jenkins said Zero Trust was the required foundation of security for all organisations.

“By combining controls with Ops, organisations are not only able to benefit from knowledge ThreatLocker has received of attempted attacks but from similar businesses defending their system from these attacks.

“The future of Zero Trust is simple; more controls, more automation, more alerts and the help and support of the community,” he said.

Ops is a policy-driven system that uses data received from the ThreatLocker agent to determine good or bad behaviour, and this data can be used to alert information technology (IT) administrators of attempted attacks or to trigger actions to further harden an environment using other components of the platform.

The Ops platform is also integrated with ThreatLocker’s new community, which allows like-kind businesses to public policies that are relevant to their business, which allows for information sharing and a more extensive set of alerts.

Ops limits reliance on other IT resources with more security controls, less agent fatigue, and no overhead on personal computers.

ThreatLocker also announces the integration of Third Wall plug-in in its zero trust platform following the acquisition of Third Wall last November.

The new additions to ThreatLocker comply with many government regulations on implementing Zero Trust strategies to prevent modern-day attacks.
