·  Horizon to create testbed to integrate its software stack Triple Alpha with quantum computing hardware
·  Testbed will have capacity for multiple quantum computers, with Rigetti Computing and Quantum Machines selected to supply components for first system
·  Horizon to become one of the first pure-play quantum software companies operating their own quantum computers

SINGAPORE, April 19 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- Horizon Quantum Computing, a company building software development tools for quantum computers, today announced that it is establishing a first-of-a-kind testbed for integrating quantum computing hardware with its software stack, Triple Alpha. The testbed, which will be set up at Horizon’s Singapore headquarters, will have the capacity to host multiple quantum computers. By acquiring its own hardware, Horizon gains full control over both hardware and software stacks, allowing it to push the frontiers of quantum computing.

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20240418068549/en/

A key aspect of Horizon’s quantum computing testbed is its modular multi-vendor approach. Rather than utilising a single-vendor solution, the company has purposely selected best-in-class components from different providers. This modularity allows Horizon to integrate its software stack with different hardware configurations and upgrade the system over time.

The first system will be based on a Novera™ quantum processor from Rigetti Computing and OPX1000, the processor-based quantum controller from Quantum Machines. The integrated system is expected to be installed by early 2025.

“Recent progress on quantum processors and error correction has underscored the rapid pace of progress in the field. We are taking the step of creating this testbed because we believe that tight integration between hardware and software is the shortest path to truly useful quantum computing,” said Dr Joe Fitzsimons, Founder & CEO at Horizon Quantum Computing. “We are delighted to work with Rigetti Computing and Quantum Machines on our first system.”

“We are thrilled that Horizon has selected the Novera QPU for their first quantum computing system. Establishing high performing on-premise quantum computing capabilities is key for working towards useful quantum computing,” said Dr Subodh Kulkarni, CEO at Rigetti Computing. “We can’t wait to witness what the Horizon team accomplishes with a quantum computing system powered by the Novera QPU and Quantum Machines’ control system.”

“We’re excited to partner with Horizon Quantum Computing and Rigetti Computing in this pioneering initiative. Our approach has always emphasized scalability, interoperability and modularity, principles that resonate with Horizon’s Triple Alpha,” said Dr Itamar Sivan, co-founder and CEO of Quantum Machines. “This collaboration with industry pioneers like Horizon and Rigetti not only showcases the adaptability and effectiveness of our processor-based OPX1000 controller in diverse setups, but also marks a significant step forward in the collective journey towards useful quantum computers.”

According to a statement, this partnership provides support for Beat Malaria campaign, which works to improve access to malaria prevention and essential health services in support of the UN Foundation’s goal of achieving a healthier and more equitable world.

“Seeing firsthand the impact that EBC Group can have by actively engaging with organisations like United to Beat Malaria reaffirms our commitment to making a difference in the communities we serve,” said EBC Financial Group (UK) Ltd, the British entity of EBC, Chief Executive Officer, David Barrett.

Meanwhile, Beat Malaria Executive Director, Margaret McDonnell said: “Our partnership with EBC Group is built on a shared commitment to protect the world’s most vulnerable children and families from this deadly yet preventable disease.

“EBC’s support will enable our campaign to reach at-risk communities and deliver life-saving interventions in malaria endemic countries to save and improve lives.”

This partnership reflects EBC’s dedication to corporate social responsibility and support to underprivileged children. EBC recognises the profound impact of malaria on the health and well-being of poverty-stricken regions, and the subsequent economic repercussions, particularly in exacerbating the disparity between developed and underprivileged regions.

In addition to financial support, EBC also seeks to educate its employees about malaria and encourage them to get involved. Last month, its APAC Director of Operations, Samuel Hertz alongside Barrett, joined over 100 malaria advocates, experts, and leaders at Beat Malaria’s annual Leadership Summit in Washington DC.

Furthermore, EBC employees will participate in the upcoming Move Against Malaria 5K, a virtual event held worldwide to raise awareness and funds to support lifesaving malaria treatment tools and programmes, slated from April 25 to May 5.

Looking ahead, EBC plans to forge deeper collaborations with UN-related charitable organisations and global partners to bolster health systems worldwide. Through these efforts and its commitment to corporate social responsibility, EBC aims to raise awareness about health disparities and promote inclusivity on a global scale.

IONEER MOVES TOWARD CONSTRUCTION AT ITS RHYOLITE RIDGE PROJECT

Image 1: Revised Plan Based on Stakeholder Feedback: 2020 Proposed Plan of Operations: 292.9 acres of disturbance within critical habitat before concurrent reclamation to establish functional pollinator habitat. 2.98 acres of direct impact to Tiehm’s buckwheat subpopulations. KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 (Bernama) -- Ioneer Ltd (Ioneer) has moved one step closer toward construction at its Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron site, following the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) planned issuance of the project’s draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), as referenced in the BLM’s statement on April 12.

The pending release of this draft EIS is the first to be issued from the Biden Administration as part of its efforts to accelerate domestic lithium production, which is the result of years of effective collaboration between Ioneer and federal, state and local agencies and Tribal Nations.

It marks a key milestone in the environmental permitting review process for the proposed greenfield project in Esmeralda County, Nevada, set to inject a critical supply of integral transition materials into the United States (US) electric vehicle (EV) battery production supply chain.

The draft document will include Ioneer’s efforts to redesign and relocate proposed project activity away from Tiehm’s buckwheat, an endangered species classified by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) in December 2022.

According to Ioneer in a statement, the draft EIS will also detail the company’s investments as part of a formal protection plan and propagation strategy for the Nevada plant.

The draft EIS will be available for public comment beginning April 19. Reaching this stage of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) permitting process reflects federal inter-agency collaboration and agreement that the draft document is ready for public input.

“The forthcoming release of the draft EIS represents six years of hard work to help build America’s critical minerals supply chain and reaffirms the viability of our investment in Nevada. Rhyolite Ridge will help accelerate the electric vehicle transition and secure a cleaner future for our children and grandchildren,” said Ioneer Executive Chairman, James Calaway.

Once operational, Ioneer’s Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron Project will be a leading example of responsible and sustainable mining. In July 2022, Ioneer submitted a revised plan of operations for federal permitting review, to avoid any direct impact to Tiehm’s buckwheat.

After listing and designation of critical habitat, which the company supported, Ioneer worked closely with the agencies and stakeholders to develop a third iteration to detail plans to further reduce indirect impacts to the plant and reduce activity within designated critical habitat.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 (Bernama) -- Smith+Nephew, the global medical technology company, has entered an agreement with NAVBIT to exclusively distribute the NAVBIT SPRINT in Australia during the recent Australian Orthopedics Association Centre of Excellence (COE) Meeting in Sydney.

A single-use, sterile navigation system with everything provided in a small carton, NAVBIT SPRINT is designed to suit busy surgeons, and its convenient product format makes it extremely practical and cost efficient for hospitals and day surgery environments.

This exclusive distribution builds upon the agreement Smith+Nephew announced for Japan in April 2023, according to the company in a statement.

“We are seeing the positive impact that NAVBIT SPRINT offers our customers in Japan and look to experience the same results in the Australian market.

“Many customers are seeking innovative solutions for THA planning and execution and NAVBIT will help us serve that specific market segment,” said Smith+Nephew International, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Kenneth Garcia.

Meanwhile, NAVBIT Chief Executive Officer, Lynette Walter said: “We are committed to supporting and serving our great Australian surgeons with smart, useful technologies - and we look forward to complementing the Smith+Nephew implant range with this very neat navigation technology.”

Post-operative dislocation remains the second most common reason for revision of a total hip replacement in registries worldwide as data suggests only 49 per cent of acetabular cups are accurately aligned when using manual instrumentation.

Hence, this compact, single-use, and simple-to-use technology offers surgeons a fast, reliable navigation solution for hip arthroplasty.

NAVBIT SPRINT is available through Smith+Nephew in Japan and Australia and has two product variants, for supine and lateral patient position; making it suitable for a range of surgical approaches, including the direct anterior approach and the posterior approach.

Blood Glycans May Accelerate Biological Ageing In HIV Patients - Wistar Findings

KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 (Bernama) -- The Wistar Institute’s associate professor Mohamed Abdel-Mohsen, along with his team and collaborators, has identified sugar abnormalities in the blood that may promote biological ageing and inflammation in people living with HIV (PLWH).

The findings, taken from a large data study comprising more than 1,200 participants, are detailed in the new paper, “Immunoglobulin G N-glycan Markers of Accelerated Biological Aging During Chronic HIV Infection”, published in the journal Nature Communications.

According to a statement, Abdel-Mohsen seeks to understand how chronic viral infection causes this accelerated biological ageing, which refers to the body ageing faster than one’s chronological years would typically indicate.

By understanding the molecular mechanisms behind accelerated biological ageing in people living with chronic viral infections, scientists can begin to formulate strategies to mitigate the negative effects.

Abdel-Mohsen said utilising glycan signatures to predict early onset of diseases in people living with HIV marks a pivotal shift towards proactive healthcare.

“This could significantly alter clinical outcomes, allowing for timely interventions and personalised treatment plans. The impact on treatment and management in the HIV community could be revolutionary.

“Beyond biomarkers, antibodies glycoengineered to mimic biologically younger glycans offer a new therapeutic avenue. This method could enhance immune responses, paving the way for innovative treatments,” he added.

Abdel-Mohsen's research investigates whether living with a chronic viral infection, such as HIV infection, exacerbates these changes, leading to premature ageing and related diseases.

By comparing glycan profiles in over 1,200 individuals, both with and without HIV, the team discovered that PLWH exhibit elevated levels of inflammatory and pro-ageing IgG glycan signatures.

In a remarkable step forward, the team developed a machine-learning model that uses these glycan signatures to estimate the biological age of PLWH and assess the rate of ageing acceleration. This glycan signature also has the potential to predict the onset of comorbid conditions in PLWH, such as cancer, years in advance.

MAJORITY BUSINESS SCHOOL ASPIRANTS WANT AI, INCLUSION, SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAMMES

KUALA LUMPUR, March 27 (Bernama) -- Equity, inclusion and sustainability programmes are essential for a huge majority of prospective students in graduate business education, and most would not even consider applying to schools that do not have them, according to a survey by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC).

The annual survey of global prospective students of business school shows more than two-thirds of potential students agreed that equity and inclusion, as well as sustainability, are important or very important to their academic experience, according to GMAC in a statement.

In addition, three-quarters of candidates say efforts around well-being — defined by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of no poverty, zero hunger, clean water and sanitation, and decent work and economic growth —are important to them when pursuing higher education, to the point that many would eliminate schools from their consideration if these themes were not incorporated in the curriculum.

“The 2024 survey of prospective students reveals that candidates expect graduate business education to help equip them to advance social impact as a component of their professional and personal goals.

“Their strong desire to build evergreen skills like leadership in an uncertain world, data-driven problem-solving, and effective technology and human capital management persists, even though their preferences for delivery formats and study destinations may shift,” said GMAC Chief Executive Officer, Joy Jones.

Also driving the interest in advanced business education of would-be students is the transformative technology of generative artificial intelligence (AI). Their demand for it grew 38 per cent year-over-year, with two-fifths now saying it is essential to their curricula.

Interest was the highest among those from the Middle East and Latin America as well as among millennials and men. Global interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)-certified business programmes also grew 38 per cent in five years, and to new heights in Asia, driven by demand in India and Greater China.

GMAC also found that candidates’ preference for hybrid programmes is growing. Over the past five years, interest in hybrid learning has grown globally at the expense of in-person learning, with most hybrid candidates wanting to spend half or more of their class time in-person and the rest online.

While the United States (US) remains the top study destination for most business school candidates globally, multi-year survey data shows that more candidates than ever before plan to apply to study within their country of citizenship instead of internationally, particularly in Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe.

This year’s summary report considers data collected in the 2023 calendar year from 4,105 respondents in 132 countries worldwide. Among them, 42 per cent were female, 61 per cent were Gen Z, and 29 per cent of the US sample were from underrepresented populations.

KFSH&RC Scientists Discover New Bacteria Species To Combat Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

KUALA LUMPUR, March 26 (Bernama) -- In a ground-breaking development, scientists at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH&RC) have identified a new species of bacteria, referred to as "Stenotrophomonas Riyadhensis" through the application of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) technology.

According to KFSH&RC in a statement, this discovery signifies a major advancement in understanding how bacteria interact with existing drugs, paving the way for innovative therapeutic strategies.

Such efforts are essential in the global fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria, highlighting KFSH&RC’s advanced research capabilities and its leading role in fostering scientific discoveries and enhancing patient care.

KFSH&RC research centre Head of the Infectious Disease and Immunity Department, Dr Ahmad Al Qahtani said: “Traditional bacterial identification methods may lead to misidentification, in contrast, WGS analysis offers a precise and targeted approach that ensures accurate identification and provides detailed insights into resistance mechanisms, proving its significance in disease outbreak investigations and patient care improvements.”

Meanwhile, its Head of Transplant Infectious Diseases at the Organ Transplant Centre of Excellence, Dr Reem Almaghrabi said the discovery’s importance in advocating for continuous monitoring and the use of advanced technologies such as WGS in developing faster and more accurate diagnostic methods.

The discovery of "Riyadhensis" reinforces the potential of genomic tests in innovating promising diagnostic and therapeutic methods, as well as deepening the understanding of bacterial resistance mechanisms, particularly in sensitive environments like intensive care units (ICU) and among patients with compromised immune systems.

This represents substantial progress in combatting antibiotic resistance, developing pharmaceuticals, and preventing the spread of diseases.

This newly identified bacteria was discovered amid an in-depth investigation into a suspected outbreak in the ICU of KFSH&RC in 2019, highlighting challenges previously unrecognised by the global scientific and medical communities in pinpointing and countering new bacterial strains.

Understanding the nuances of new bacterial species, particularly their antibiotic resistance, is crucial in modern healthcare and serves as the primary means of combatting bacterial infections. As these bacteria continuously evolve their resistance, they pose a significant and ongoing threat to human health.
