TESCO ORGANISES WALK FOR KIDS 2017

More than 3,000 participants registered to help support big initiative for the needs of the schools

KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 (Bernama) -- The serene park of Desa Parkcity came alive on 26 February 2017 as over 3,000 participants walked the scenic route and enjoyed the numerous activities and performances during Tesco Walk For Kids 2017 organised by Tesco Malaysia (Tesco).

The walkathon event held at the Sports Centre of Desa Parkcity, Kuala Lumpur saw families, children, students, teachers and sports enthusiasts walking a 2KM scenic route within the compound of Desa Parkcity. Tesco Walk For Kids 2017 is one of Tesco Malaysia’s annual fund raising event to support seven underserved schools in Klang Valley. The event exceeded its initial target of RM200,000 as approximately RM400,000 was raised from participation fees, cash donations and in kind contribution from Tesco’s business partners and suppliers.

“We are truly grateful for all the contribution and support we received for this event. The funds raised will be used to help funds educational, health and wellness as well as students welfare programs that we are looking to support at each of our adopted schools. In addition, we hope to improve these schools facilities available so that the students are able to have a conducive and comfortable learning environment,” said Paul Ritchie, CEO Tesco Malaysia.

Tesco Walk For Kids 2017 was flagged off by Paul Ritchie accompanied by PINTAR Foundation CEO, Karimah Tan Abdullah, Desa Parkcity Township General Manager, Sukhdev Singh and Tesco Malaysia’s Corporate Services Director, Azliza Azmel.

Participants received a finisher medal as well as goodie bag upon completing the walk and were entertained by cheerleading performance and several dance performances by the adopted schools. Other activities includes planking challenge, live performance by local band, Hydra Malaysia and product sampling from Milo, Tesco Grocery Home Shopping truck, and Pokey wagon. Malaysia’s Female Mixed Martial Arts champion, Ann Osman also made a special appearance and helped in the fundraising efforts through a charity arm wrestling challenge.

In addition to the great support by the Malaysian community, a number of corporate companies came forward to support and contribute towards this event. Desa Parkcity was the venue sponsor while Sime Darby Ramsay Medical Center came forward with medical care support throughout the event. Other sponsors are Nestle, Marigold, Stabilo, Staedtler, Zuellig Pharma, Mondelez, Delfi, Vsoy, Starbucks, Goodnite, Darlie, City Mart, CP Stationery, Ginvera, Sports Direct, Pocky, Mr. DIY, Heelee, Marrybrown and many more.

“Today’s event (26 February 2017) would not be possible without the help of both the Malaysian community as well as the corporate sectors. Our biggest appreciation goes to all our sponsors whom have come forward to contribute cash, products as well as in kind contributions. The support given by teachers and parents are also important in making this event a great success,” added Paul.

Tesco Walk For Kids 2017 is the large scale fundraising effort since Tesco Malaysia launched its School Adoption Program together with PINTAR Foundation in November 2016 as part of its contribution in education of the children in the community. The three-year adoption program will allow Tesco to support all 59 adopted schools in terms of education, student welfare and nutritional awareness.
