Spryker research: 48 pct of Australian consumers order groceries online

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 (Bernama) -- Forty-eight per cent of Australians have opted to shop for their groceries online with 10 per cent ordering most or all of their groceries via the internet, according to Spryker’s Australian Online Grocery Report 2022.

The report also revealed that 23 per cent of household food budgets are spent on online orders.

The research involved 2,500 Australian consumers and was conducted in mid-2022.

“Our latest research showed that Australian shoppers focused on lower costs and better product selection when it comes to buying online,” Spryker co-founder and chief executive officer Boris Lokschin said in a statement.

He said retailers working with composable commerce solutions will be best prepared to grab market share in this sophisticated and dynamic grocery market.

“Their focus must be on delivering a seamless online shopping experience that exceeds consumers’ expectations. With a best-of-breed approach, retailers can have the flexibility to adjust to changing customer needs,” Lokschin said.

The Australian grocery market is currently valued at US$125 billion and there is substantial opportunities for retailers to offer services in online grocery shopping. (US$1=RM4.692)

In fact, almost one in five respondents, or 18 per cent, said they see themselves buying most or all of their groceries online within two years.

Currently, shoppers in the 25-44 age group are most likely to order online and spend the highest percentage of their grocery budget online compared to other age groups.

However, those between 45 and 65 match the younger groups in terms of the total amount spent online – despite this being a lower overall percentage of their grocery budgets.

Conducted by Spryker in partnership with market research firm Appinio, the research surveyed consumers from across Australia on their experiences and opinions of grocery shopping.
